I’d say best E38 is the 728i or 730d if you can grab either one…. For the US folks… they are screwed since 740i/il and 750i/il were the only options…. M62 and M73 engines aren’t ideal when it comes to reliability compared to M52 and M57 engines…

The way I see it is that the lovely S62 comes from an already perfect car: The E39 M5. Taking one of these off the road to upgrade the E31 is not ideal.

***YOU MANIAC LOL*** I’ve had my ‘01 E38 from acquisition in ‘05. Restoring with Halo front and LED rear lighting. Interior wood all refinished in carbon fiber, along with carbon fiber badge kit. Re-dye all leather, replace headliner in ‘faux suede’, and powder-coat the wheels to new. Suspension refurbished, next is top-engine overhaul. ***I will be buried in this car*** Cheers mate 🍻

Ed, one thing you have missed on the 728i - it has reduced my 80 years to 40.

I just finished my 840ci M62 auto-to-manual conversion. What recoding did you guys have to do with the DME to prevent transmission error codes?

As they say “the most expensive BMW you will own is the cheapest one to buy”. After 200ks they are cheap to buy. Not designed for affordable longevity. As a diy person this really puts me off the BMW diesels, will stick with petrol, M54 say.

Good job. Obviously the turbo failed because of the tuning to add more hp to the engine and/or the owner was a little bit too hard on the engine

change the fluid and filter in the transmission is my number one tip with these cars. also a coolant flush is also a good idea when buying these cars. if i bought e38 I would just change all the six fluids just to be safe in the long run

Should I change the oil pump when I replace all the chains? The previous owner of my car changed all the chains but not the oil pump.

Car is looking good! I don't think you should zinc plate the hubs. Fasteners, yes, but not major components. Keep it as close to stock as you can.

There is so much rust and dirt, I couldn't stand driving a car like that, they need a serious refresh job . With time it's only going to get worse at some point you will have to change entire frame parts. Even so you would have to preferably check all those rusted frames with an ultrasound probe for eternal corrosion, before you do an entire treatment on it. I would also take the entire engine and gear box apart clean it check it for any problems etc. Cars like this are just going to break more and more in time before they are to expensive to salvage unless they are well maintained.
